Spanish Princess Becomes First Royal To Die Of Coronavirus Complications

Spain’s Maria Teresa de Borbon-Parma has died at the age of 86 due to coronavirus complications.

On Thursday (March 26), her brother Prince Sixto Enrique de Borbon, the Duke of Aranjuez, announced her passing on Facebook, writing, “On this afternoon… our sister Maria Teresa de Borbon Parma and Borbon Busset, victim of the coronavirus COVID-19, died in Paris at the age of eighty-six."

According to the prince, Maria Teresa passed away in Paris. A memorial service was held in her honor on Friday (March 27) in Madrid.

The princess, who was cousin to Spain’s King Felipe IV, was a longtime advocate of women's rights and was dubbed the “Red Princess” because of her outspoken views, People noted. Her death came as King Felipe, who tested negative for coronavirus earlier this month, made a visit to an emergency field hospital in Madrid.

Maria Teresa is the first royal to die from the novel coronavirus.

Earlier this week, it was announced that the U.K.’s Prince Charles tested positive for COVID-19. Monaco’s Prince Albert has also tested positive for coronavirus.
